Not Showing: Page One: Inside the New York Times

Actually this is not the following blog. hehe But anyway, I'll just prepare for that one and just a short one about this documentary.

I was just curious about the trailer of this one, because it shows how newspaper business falling down. Not because of the bad print or poor news, but many factors involved. Unfortunately, that same goes with one of the prestigious newspapers in the world. The New York Times. I read the Wall Street Journal, if there is one free. hehe

But I consider The New York Times good especially with great journalism, the eye opening investigations and one of the longest newspapers in the US.

I got to watch it and felt at first I want to rush it because I am in a hurry and skipping parts and end it up, I watch the whole thing. Still except some parts. hehe

Well, the premise is simple, at the dawn of the net, and yes, advertising is not really good due to the economic conditions currently, then the rise of WikiLeaks.. The New York Times is quite working in survival mode. This tells how they deal with these factors, and still doing great journalism work.

The documentary is good. But not great or fantastic in some way..

First it's because with those factors affecting them, it is always their script or topic. And it goes along until the end, which for me, quite I felt hopeless.. Especially the parts that they show redundancy of the oldest workers which is very very sad.. Second, there is no brief history of how they became like great. I know they did not add it because they are very known and famous.. But at least, if they can show how they start then how they became successful, maybe that will interest me more. Because after that, it is more of the strategies they do to cope up with these problems.

They are quite flaws that I hope helped to improve the documentary.. I still like Gasland over this one, even Gasland has some problems but it ended up great. For this one, nah.. not great, not a downer though.

What I like for this docu are the pace of the docu. No like interview set up, the main editors/characters just tell what they feel and what to do. I love Mr. Carr, the previous addict who became a great writer and now editor at the Times, geez, his style is straight forward but effective. Especially how he nail the Tribune Company fiasco. hehe How he views as well at the Times, especially that these times. I like the style of having all sides saying why The Times is having these problems and what to improve on. Even the Managing Editors admit such difficult problems but they are doing the best of solving this problems and still proud of staying strong for this institution.

Lastly, I was shocked that they worked with WikiLeaks... Especially the leaks they got and how to really filter information to the people from the leaks but not changing the meaning or message of the leaks. It was interesting and they made a good job at that. To add as well, the part which as an institution, they had some flaws and they admit it and remove those employees who put the Times at a bad light. Like the one writer who wrote about wrong intel information and used the Times to spread the intel information which really made the US invasion of Iraq not so successful. E.G. That Saddam stored nukes to go on war which in truth, Iraq did not really store any nukes. Maybe Iran has.. But nah.. Wrong info..

Well, for this one, it's a good one but well, there are other good documentaries than this one. For example, capitalism by Michael Moore which even it's good but entertaining.. Not his best work, I put sicko on top of this one.. Meaning this documentary lack something other than the points above.. Maybe because it is short or just it was limited info that was shown.

However, it is not a bad one.. You can watch it and yeah, you read them as well.. hehe

Times are changin'
