Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Raims and I were debating about Lost in Translation while eating at Yellow cab, she brought up another movie. Um, look the title, I'm tired of repeating it. hehe Anyhow, I did remember that movie before but I was mesmerized with LIT because of Bill Murray then Scarlett Johansson (if I got the spelling right), and the movie itself.

But what I got interested in this movie above, well, the story itself and written by Charlie Kaufman, (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation), which likes going into human minds and emotions, so give myself a try. Besides, it's free. hehe

It took some time to get the movie and to convert it into my zune. Coming with this movie is Yes Man and other comedies as well.

It took some time to watch as well because of my busy life, very busy one and I can't watch it at night because I might be late for my work. hehe

However, it always comes to my mind how Raims describes this movie. Somewhat encouraging me to watch it asap. I don't know why but when that time came, well I did and

The rest is history..

Damn magnificent movie, whatever you can call it great and for me, an almost perfect love story.. Checked imdb.com, one of the best movies of all time. Critics, reviews, whatever..

I never saw it coming. hehe

Perhaps why? Is Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet a perfect match? Or with the idea of erasing peoples memories treat it like a rehab, you can easily do it. A different universe and a perspective about love and hate, memories to be exact.

Somehow, to answer that..

You need to watch it for yourself.

You won't regret it..

All starts when Joel (Jim Carrey) wakes up a simple morning. Goes to work, and rode the wrong train, went to a beach and on the way back, he met.. Clementine (Kate Winslet), a very eccentric, ah impulsive woman.. You will hear more words of "impulsive" in the movie.. hehe Not many but when it was said to the movie, it's really about Clem.. Short for Clementine..

After those getting to know each other and the scene where they went to ice caps, there goes the opening credits seeing Joel cry.. Then there is the song of Beck. hehe

The sad part begins.. Broken hearted Joel just discovered he was forgotten by Clem all of the sudden. On top of that, he discovered a letter says that he was erased from Clem's memories with a help of a weird clinic who does that..

Erasing memories. How cruel it is.. It was..

Joel thought of doing the same to Clem.. Lacuna by the way is the name of the shaddy clinic..

Joel went to the clinic and agreed with the procedure.

He asked why he was removed from Clem's memories, the Doc didn't discuss it, oh sorry, he did say Clem was not happy anymore.

Then the process began, from packing the things he used to have associated with Clem and prepare himself for the process.

A painstaking process!!!

As Joel went to sleep, he's like travelling the memories he had with Clem. From the time how they broke up, then some bad arguements as well, then days they just don't work..

However, there are more happy moments of them together. Which Joel seems to regret doing the process, wants to stop it, especially the scene where he and Clem are under a matress and that's sweet.. Hay.. hehe

Another scene that caught my senses, was when they just lay down at the ice caps... To tell you the truth, the line " I could die right now, Clem. I'm just... happy. I've never felt that before. I'm just exactly where I want to be. "

Yes, not the exact words, but I used to write that line in a letter..

Anyhow, there are many scenes involving those sweet memories..

At the middle of the process, Joel decided to do something drastic asap to keep Clem in his memories.

Well, luck was his side, he was able to keep Clem in his memories only for the time being.

As the story progress, those dudes from Lacuna, (Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood) just playing and let the machine works for them..

Yes, Kirsten and Mark had sex... hehe But unfortunately, the machine stopped working for Joel, like there was an alarm so the tech woke up.. Try to work it out, called the head doctor (Tom Wilkinson) and finish the process.

While doing that, Joel and Clem try to get out of the situation. I love the scene where they are in the forest and says,

Clem: I'm sorry you know, I'm implusive,
Joel: That's why I love about you..

Darn.. hehe

They were able to think a way to solve the problem, Joel thought of memories which Clem doesn't belong, well, childhood memories of Joel.. Or even some weird moments of his life.

The head doctor doing his part and now getting the process of getting rid Clem in Joel's memories..

Then in Joel's part, unfortunately, it's now working thanks to the head doctor and some side past with Kirsten.. Even he tries escaping the procedure, little by little, he is losing Clem..

Romantic yet sad scenes came through, like the library scene which reminds of them getting close, and the scene which they first met in Montauk. Between those scenes, they knew what's happening in their memories and telling each other their love and compassion.. Missing each other as well.. They will miss each other..

As the last scene approaches, I mean the memories they have.. Its disintegrating, then as Clem states, "meet me in Montauk". Joel starting to have a last look at the memories with Clem then suddenly he wakes up..

He wakes up just like the first scene.. Meaning, he already met Clem when he saw her at the train.. Very clever.. Well, at the Lacuna's Lab, Kirsten left the office because of what she discovered then gave the files back to the people who took the memory erasing procedure, including the love birds...

As you saw the first scene, Clem got the tape. Joel heard it at his car, he dropped off Clem at the middle of the street then Clem kinda frustrated... Tried to reconcile with Joel, so she went to Joel, said sorry and wanted to leave..

However, Joel who has also his tape, doesn't want Clem to leave..

He says, he doesn't care if Clem is kinda impulsive, he just wants Clem to stay..

Then they walked again in a beach, in winter time like nothing happened..

then song "everybody gotta learn sometime" kicks in..

The End.

(P.S. for the whole review you need to find it somewhere. writer's edit. hehe)
